It was a magical experience…to say at least 🤩

Thanks to this event, I got my first hoop. And during the last 20 years, I played b-ball on almost every type of system there is. One of the best basketball systems I have ever touched is in-ground.

What You Should Think About Before Investing In In-Ground Basketball Hoops

If you are thinking about getting a brand-new in-ground basketball hoop, you need to make sure that you know exactly what you are looking for.

After all, this is not a small investment and it has to be done right!

No worries, my extensive buying guide will lead you through goal components, attributes, and various other considerations to think about before getting a basketball system.

Location, Location, Location

If you have a large yard with lots of free space, why not alter it into an outdoor basketball court for practising your skills or simply enjoying the b-ball with your family and friends?

That said, you can build a full-court, and even half-cour field in your yard.

In-Ground Basketball Hoop

Alternatively, a good place for your outdoor in-ground basketball hoop would be in front of your house. However, this might not be the best option, although it works if the surface is flat and big enough for a court.

Important! Make sure to pick an area free of greenery.

Never ever allow plants or trees to grow around the anchor screws. Greenery can cause long-term damage to your structure and need to be kept away from the anchoring system.

Can You Legally Install the Hoop on the Location?

Basketball courts cover a big location. So if you choose to build a court in your yard, you’ll likely need to prepare around any type of buried lines.

Therefore, make sure to notify your local utility company of your intent to dig. CALL811.com has additional information on what to anticipate and exactly how you should adhere to the procedure.

That said, make sure to ALWAYS contact the authorities before excavating. This is also a good idea if your hoop goes on your driveway.

By the way, here is a step-by-step guide for installing an in-ground b-ball system.

Have You Considered the Court Dimensions?

If your plan is to construct a specialized basketball court, size is one of the most typical considerations.

Here are the most common dimensions:

  • For the NBA court, the regulation sizes are 94 feet long and 50 feet wide.
  • For high school courts, the court sizes are 84 feet long and 50 feet wide.
  • The junior high school court sizes are 74 feet long and 42 feet wide.
  • Half-court usually is 50 feet long and 47 feet wide.

What Type of Surface Do You Want?

If you are going to put your in-ground basketball system in front of your garage, then you don’t have to think about the surface. You already have it!

On the other hand, if you are going to build your own court, here are the most popular surface types:

  • Asphalt – Budget-friendly, but will need to be replaced and repaired. Can also accept court paint.
  • Concrete – Budget-friendly, but can wear down the surface of your basketball and isn’t friendly when fallen on.
  • Sports titles – Great, flexible flooring for all-around use both outdoors and in. Colour options make it customizable and attractive. Easy to replace even one damaged title.

Now that you have a general idea of your basketball court location, let’s see what else you need to think about before getting an in-ground hoop…

In-Ground Hoop Support Pole

A good support system is necessary for the longevity of your basketball system, and it starts with…

Anchoring System

Unlike the best mobile basketball goals that have a portable base, in-ground systems have to be cemented into the ground. However, some high-end goals come with advanced anchoring systems.

See, the anchoring system permits you to fix or screw your hoop to a concrete footing instead of cementing the goal post in the ground.

in-ground-anchoring-system

That said, this will enable you to unbolt the system from the ground and take it with you if you relocate.

A regular anchor system includes a collection of 4 to 6 threaded support bolts installed right into a poured concrete ground. Four sticks of steel strengthening bars are additionally provided to strengthen the entire system.

Pole Shape, Thickness, and Dimensions

There are two types of posts:

  • Round poles – These posts are commonly made from steel less than 1/8″ thick. Such thin steel can rust through in just a couple of short years. To make the matter worse, these slim poles tend to shake and vibrate thus lowering your gaming experience.
  • Square poles – A square pole style reduces vibration and trembling of the system and provides the very best assistance for larger, glass backboards. Post thickness of 11 scales or much heavier will certainly give you maximum stability.

Sturdy basketball post dimensions generally fall under four groups: 5″x5″, 6″x6″, 6″x8″, and also 8″x8″.

Pole Padding

Soft padding protects against injury if you collide with the pole throughout a layup or other driving action. Therefore, for your safety, it’s important to choose a system with solid padding around the pole.

Luckily, you will find several good options on my list of the best in-ground basketball goals!

Height Adjustment

The most common elevation adjustment range is from 7.5 to 10 feet, with higher-end hoops adjusting to as low as 5 feet.

Each adjustable goal also uses some sort of system to raise and lower the rim and board.

Therefore, if you have children, picking a hoop that decreases down allows them the benefit of shooting from the appropriate height for their age.

This will be great to enhance correct shooting routines as they grow!

Backboard Specifications

The next thing you need to consider before you get your in-ground basketball hoop is the backboard. So far, I will lead you through the most important specs…

Backboard Specs

Size

Backboards come in many different sizes. The most common are:

  • 54″ wide – This is an excellent dimension for those with little space or a smaller sized spending plan. Moreover, it is excellent for a 1-car driveway or little court.
  • 60″ wide – If you have a bigger surface, a 60″ basketball goal offers a wonderful playing experience while not taking up excessive space.
  • 72″ – Regulation-sized hoops are appropriate for big courts. If you are a pro-level player and have the room, there is simply no alternative to practising with a pro-level hoop.

Material

  • Acrylic – although intended to imitate the look of glass, can become scratched and messed up gradually. These backboards are lighter and less dense, which suggests less bounce.
  • Polycarbonate – these backboards are lightweight and resistant. They have comparable rebound responses as Acrylic boards.
  • Tempered glass – glass boards are the finest quality backboards and are what you will find on a high school, university or NBA court. It is larger and thicker so it offers the best rebound effect.

Support System

A great support system is required for the durability of your in-ground basketball goal.

  • H-Frame supported backboards are the best option. They form a steel “H” visible behind the glass generally positioned behind the shooter’s square. If you are a serious player, the H structure style support is the most likely to never fall short.
  • Clear View support provides a durable, tidy look without any blockage behind the glass. This backboard support integrates the rim assistance right into a steel perimeter structure that runs around the outer side of the backboard behind the glass. This design is also extremely sturdy and can take use and abuse.

Overhang

The overhang is the distance between the face of the backboard and the face of the pole. The larger the overhang, the more space under your in-ground hoop.

On a regulation basketball court, the distance from the baseline to the face of the backboard is 4 feet. This gives you the room needed to practice post moves and drive under the basket.

On the other hand, if your court is shorter, hoops with 2-3 feet overhang will be enough to allow comfortable play as well.

Main Types of Rims

There are 2 primary categories of basketball rims. These categories are:

Rim Types

Breakaway

Breakaway rims typically have what is called a “detent” system built right into the inside of the box where the return springs are installed.

This detent system is designed to regulate the amount of pressure required to bend the rim down.

Therefore, if you are a type of hoopster who is looking for a sturdy rim, you should definitely go with this kind.

Fixed

Due to the fact that a fixed rim does not have pivot factors or springs, and is constructed from sturdy materials, it will literally never stop working from overuse/abuse.

However, these rims offer a lower bounce effect. In other words, compared to breakaway and flex times, fixed type doesn’t give you a feeling of playing on a professional rim.

On the other hand, they are less expensive and great for kids and teenage hoopsters.

With this, we have come to the end of my buying guide!

Let’s now go over the top 7 in-ground basketball goals in 2022 to help you find the best one…

  1. Man, basketball hoops have come a long way since I was young.  I remember my Dad taking a pole he found and using Quickrete to hold it in the ground.  The pole was so tall it was about 2 feet taller than a regulation hoop.  That thing didn’t budge, but it also didn’t see as many dunks either.

This guide is definitely going to help someone make a better decision on which hoop is  best for their space.  I do have a question though.  On the topic of floor surface options, how well does the sport tile last if used outdoors? I like that option because that’s what most players will be playing on.

When it comes to the different size backboards, in what circumstances would someone be able to tell what size backboard they would like to use?

Someone following this guide should have no troubles decided on which basketball hoop is right for them.

    • Hi Ashley, thanks for your comment. Hoops have come a long long way indeed. It’s an ever-evolving sport!

Glad to hear my guide was helpful. Generally speaking, sports tiles are a great choice for your outdoor basketball court because they will last a long time despite the elements(you need to buy the ones for the outdoors). Moreover, even if a part of the court (a tile) gets damaged, you can easily replace it!

When it comes to backboard sizes, you have to take a look at what kind of a player you are and who is going to play on it. If you are using the board a lot for shooting bank shots or layups, then the rule of thumb is the larger the better. On the other hand, if young players are going to be using the hoop (under 15), you can go with smaller than regulation size.

      I hope this helps!

  2. I needed to get a Hoop for my grandchildren and could not decide on one. Rephrased my Google search term to best Ground Basketball Hoops and came across your blog review. Your blog review has helped me make a decision and I am going to go with Spalding 888. Thanks for a wonderful list.

  3. When deciding upon which basketball goal to get for your hoopsters and the ones in the neighbourhood you need to look at several factors. You need to look at the price and durability of the goal. If you go for one that is inexpensive then will it grow with your hoopster without having to make any major changes? Does it have all the right elements for what play would be like for league play so that experience gained with this goal will translate to play on an official court? I found the GS54 to have the best value and can grow with the age and skill of your hoopster.

  4. I have been trying to get my son a Hoop for a long time since he was in middle school, now the he’s at high school is one of my priorities.

After reading your post now is more clear for me which one should I buy for him since he is on the dunking stuff. I thought all basketball hoops were the same, but thanks  to your post, I can see the difference between one and the other

I’m choosing the GS54 Goal because of your recommendation do you think this will the best for me my son since he likes to dunk?

I also like the MVP 72″ In-Ground Hoop.

    Let me know

Thank you and God Bless You

    • The biggest difference between MVP and GS54 is the price tag. Both hoops are sturdy and can take a dunking and harsh play. However, the GS54 is a bit weaker and might shake more than MVP, but that’s only if your kid is built like Shaq 😀 In the end, both hoops are great and highly recommended. If you want a pro-style model, go with MVP. If you are looking for a good-quality model for less cash, GS54 is the one!

  5. I’ve got to say Ivan this is a very informative post. I’ve never really considered buying an in-ground basketball hoop but a friend of man who’s planning to build at court at his place said he’d actually have an in-ground basketball hoop than any other. For me two of the main reasons I’d not consider them is that they are more expensive and if not well anchored they could be very dangerous especially for people like be who love dunking. Thanks for this informative post and I’m definitely going to forward it to my friend because he’ll surely love this.

  6. Considering all the possibilities before constructing anything that will really change your yard is crucial for not only property valus but for appearance of your place. It is so essential and necessary to make an accurate plan and visualization of the project. Your thorough descriptions of the considerations needed will help in the planning and the implementation of this project of a basketball area. Costs, durability, aethetics, and affordability all need to be considered and well thought out when plaaning this project. Thank you for providing so much valuable information and in ensuring that all the needed possibilities are weighed before making a major decision.

  7. Basketball has progressed a long way since I was a kid. My father once used Quickrete to secure a pole he had found in the ground. The pole was nearly 2 feet taller than a standard basketball hoop. That item didn’t move, but it didn’t witness nearly as many dunks.

After reading your essay, it’s clearer to me which one I should get for him now that he’s into dunking. I used to believe that all basketball hoops were the same, but now that I’ve read your post, I can tell the difference between them.

Thank you for providing so much useful information and for ensuring that all viable options are considered before making a decision.

  8. This is a great selection of in-ground basketball hoops. They do seem to vary in price tremendously and I never knew they could be as costly as $3,000. So if you do invest in a quality and high budget hoop, you certainly would want to take it with you when you move. So it is a great tip to look at the anchoring system. It is far better to bolt the hoop into a concrete slab, than cementing the pole into the ground.

It will be hard to choose between all these hoops, so I will share with my family to decide on the best one for our budget.

  9. Hi Ivan

My husband and I are currently looking to build a basket court for our daughter along with an in-ground basket ball hoop. Thank you so much for this extensive guide as there are so many important points to consider. Using several different resources has been a silent nightmare for us both. I think we want to start by building the court. We’re definitely leaning towards Asphalt as well, we were sort of thinking that in terms of repairs this surface would be more viable than concrete. Certainly in terms of on-going expenses. I hope I’m going down the right path here! I’ll go through your guide again and get back to you with a few questions.

    Thanks again Ivan, most appreciative.

  10. Thanks for this very insightful article. You see my family loves playing basketball and so we play a lot. However the one thing we don’t have is a basketball hoop. After reading this review I find that one of these hoops would be a good choice for the family. Especially since they are in good quality unlike others I have found. So thanks for making my job easier.
